About US
The Building of the Stansted Park Light Railway.
My name is Geoff Jago, I’m married to Anne, and we have a adult son.
I am semi-retired from automotive engineering and am now a
pensioner.
I started at the age of 16 in Hayter’s Garage in Portchester, and in
1960, I started my own car repair and Hot-Rod building business. I was
mainly responsible for the introduction of American style Hot-Rods to
the U.K. in the early 60’s.
I moved to Chichester in 1969 and with the help of my then business
partner, bought a factory that became Jago Developments. My good
friend and partner, Collin Farren, now caters for the everyday running
of the Company which has allowed me to concentrate on the Railway.
As a young boy, I always had a fascination for railways of all types and
gauges and model engineering in general. As a member of Fareham
Model Engineers, my brother-in law Ian and myself were mainly
responsible for building the 900ft 7.25” gauge track on which we could
run our locomotives.
After driving around in circles for several years, getting bored since
there was no room for expansion, I started looking for a larger site.
This would enable me to create a larger railway with greater potential,
and to offer rides to the Public to help finance the expansion.
After looking at several Country parks and some farmland locations, I
decided that none matched my requirements. Finally I contacted the
Stansted Park Trust, who proved to be very enthusiastic about the
project, as they anticipated that the Railway would prove to be an
added attraction for visitors to the House and Park Estate.
Two years were spent in obtaining the necessary planning
permissions and I started building in the summer of 2003. Shortly after,
my friends Nick Mooney and Ted Millson, joined me, their help and
enthusiasm has been a very large, much appreciated, contribution to
the building of the railway. We also have many part time volunteers,
whose help is very much appreciated, in particular, Martin Barker, who
is producing all the documentation that we will need for Public running.
At the moment, the track is approximately half a mile long and runs
through a scenic woods and Aboretum setting. There is also a
occasional chance to see the deer herds from the train.
We are always happy to see and talk to anyone, young or old, male or
female who may be interested in helping to run the |Railway, or
develop an interest in engineering and servicing the locomotives and
stock. When our new workshop is built and running, servicing, repair
and new building of locos will be possible and we are keen to help a
keen young (or not so young) person to build and operate their own
loco be it steam, diesel or electric, on our Railway or on visits to other
railways.
